Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
For our first, featured International beer, we simply couldn't go past this one from the guys at Sierra Nevada, based in California (USA).

Tell us what you're thinking...
Beer looks great lads… I’ll have to head to the local purvis to find a 6 pack.. Nice hat!!
Totally agree with your segement guys. Discovered it living in L.A. and drank very little else. Also think it has some similarities to Little Creatures
A bit disappointed to see you reviewing international beers so early, when there is still so much Aussie beer to cover, as well as the Sierra Neveda beer being grey imports at the moment, impacting their quality. Thankfully, they will be legit imports very soon, with Pheonix Beer (WA) bringing them into the country refrigerated.
The Sierra Nevada is a very solid choice for your first International Beer. Did you know they are also releasing in cans soon? What’s your opinion on canned beer (not VB!)?
I live in California, and this is my favorite beer. In fact, it is the only beer I can drink, as after you have a few, nothing else will do.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is one of my favorites. I’ve been drinking that stuff for over 15 years now. Of course it does help that I grew up at Lake Tahoe, which is relatively close to Chico (The Sierra Nevada Brewery).
Great idea for a video, but way too much reverberation in the audio.
Suggestion, record dry and add moderate reverb in the mix.
BTW – I’m a great Sierra Nevada fan.
Regards,
Pierre
Glad you found some of our local “flava!” I certainly wish we could get more Aussie beer here in California without having to hunt daylong for it.
Fosters is pretty widespread, but anything else is very hard to find.
Cheers from the States!
i live in chico. the sierra nevada company is the greatest thing in california. i don’t know what i would do without my pale ale! you’ll have to find their seasonal ‘summerfest’ when that comes out in about may or june. it’s the best crisp lager i’ve ever had!
Just had a couple of weeks in Oz (I’m English) but I also spend a lot of time in the US…where I always drink this beer (along with Sam Adams – these are the two best US beers for me). Having spent some time with Australian relatives & understanding how much you guys appreciate good beer, I have to say you’ve picked an excellent international beer. I know that you produce some great beers, but good on you for looking overseas as well…I’m not American, I have no axe to grind but I believe that everyone has the right to drink excellent beer & you’re helping people do that. All power to you.
Thanks Boys, We are SO VERY proud of our local beer & brewery – Sierra Nevada. Kenny the owner also does a lot for our local community and environmental protection. Sierra Nevada is just a good thing all the way around! From a 25 year fan in Chico! Try the “Summer Fest: next!
Greetings from the land of Sierra Nevada beer (Chico)! You guys are too cute. Loved this. I thought I didn’t like beer until I had my first Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and now? Well, now I could embarrass myself with it. Go easy on it, boys, it’s like eating a steak. : )
Also, hope you can get someone to import a little of their Torpedo Extra IPA, or their seasonal winter beers (Celebration Christmas ale, Bigfoot barleywine). Heaven.
Cheers!
Ty – did you have your chaps on behind the bar. Would have been funny to see you walk out with them on.
Great review
Flavour flavour flavour!!! Betta try some…
Great review of a great beer.
When SlowBeer manage another US Import, you need to get your hands on the Torpedo….it is the Pale Ale on steroids…..good steroids I might add!!
Cheers
Great episode gents – tell me, where can I find this beer in Melbourne?
Ty, not sure why but I had flashbacks to Tone at the reception desk at the Medina in Coogee when I saw the opening shot of you in that cowboy hat…..
Gents, Dan Murphy’s have 3 of the Sierra Nevada range in store at the moment – the Pale Ale, the Kellerweis Hefeweizen and the Torpedo Extra IPA which weighs in at a whopping 7.2% alc/vol.
I had the latter with a beautifully pan-seared black sesame crusted salmon fillet with ponzu dressing tonight – not even the richness of the salmon could tame the extreme hoppiness and bitterness of the Torpedo. IPA on steroids!
@Mike,
Thanks for the feedback on where to buy this beer. You actually answered your own question above, so we’ll have to give our comment reply officer (young Trevor) his first warning; the lazy sod
Yes, finally this beer is now a legitimate import – so availability has increased markedly & the price has come down too. This is due to a WA based beer importer called Phoenix Beers who bought the supply rights earlier this year. Even better, they get it shipped over using refrigerated transport, and cold store it before sending it around the country.
Glad to hear about the Torpedo IPA, we’ll need to give this one a crack also…will need some soy sauce first for that ponzu dressing – you’re not an alias for that fat bloke on Masterchef are you…
